Background Information

Distinguishing Features

Tas is 5ft tall, around the average height for a Ferengi male, he has the usual blue fingernails and sharp teeth as well as soft ridges around his forehead and nose. His ears are large even for a Ferengi and he has remarkable hearing, he has large bright blue eyes. When he blushes his cheeks go a purplish colour due to his blue blood.

Characteristics & Background

Tas has a naturally caring nature and goes against the Ferengi cultural norms which dictate the importance of profit. He has in fact no interest whatsoever in economics and is motivated by his curiosity and a a desire to help others.

He has a fondness for animals and considers his vole Codey as his best friend. Tas is vegan because he cannot bare the thought of hurting other lifeforms. He has a softer tone of voice that he uses when speaking to animals or to people who or unwell or vulnerable.

Tas is intensely curious and joined the DFA with the hopes of being able to travel and discover new cultures. He felt trapped throughout his childhood on Ferenginar and dreamed of the day that he could see the universe and help its dezians.

Tas tends to be nervous and does not like being in a position of having to make command decisions, finding the responsibility stressful and fearing that he makes a mistake, although when it is necessary he can be assertive and will fight for whatever he thinks is needed for the well-being of those in his care. In spite of Tas’ anxiety he can be very responsible when he needs to be, being very much so with his little sister Azel, but will not volunteer to lead.

Tas tends to be loyal to his friends, especially to Paige whom he considers as family, and willing to get himself into trouble if it means helping them, he is  very protective over his little sister Azel whom he considers to be his greatest responsibility. Azel considers Tas to be over-protective and accuses him of treating her like a small child.

He tends to be clumsy and undisciplined, often making embarrassing mistakes in more militaristic situations, although his natural optimistic outlook on life and his sense of humour and usually allow him to brush of any embarrassment and pick himself up after mistakes without feeling too badly disheartened. His coordination has improved considerably at his time in the DFA Academy through the help of his close friend Paige Mallory but when he is excited or nervous he still tends to be liable to falling over.

Tas is intelligent academically and usually performs better in written exams than practical ones although through the Acadamy and Paige’s help he is learning to improve in the less academic aspects of being a medic for the DFA.

Background

Tas was raised on Ferenginar with his younger sister Azel. Their farther was rarely home, usually being away conducting intergalactic trade for the Ferengi Alliance and so Tas and Azel saw very little of him. On those rare occasions that Tas did see his farther he was always met with disapproval, his farther thought him stupid because he had no interest in learning the Rules of Acquisition. Tas’ mother payed him a lot of attention, every day attempting to give him lessons on the Ferengi economy, but Tas tended not to listen or to disappear at lesson times.

He spent most of his childhood playing in the family’s garden, often on his own but sometimes with his little sister. He was in the habit of rescuing stray or injured animals and at the age of 10 he adopted a 3 legged vole, paying full price for the animal and spending all of his naming day money. He named the vole Codey and trained her. She came everywhere with Tas, usually traveling on the little boy’s shoulder.

As he got older he began to notice how much his little sister used to hang around when he was getting his lessons and began to understand how much she wanted to learn. She had ironically memorised the rules of acquisition that he had protested to learning. At the age of 13 Tas began to teach his 10 year old sister since no one else would.

When Tas turned 17 he began an apprenticeship with his father’s business but he hated every minuet and so he studied in every spare moment he had an took the DFA Academy Entrance exams from Ferenginar in secret. As soon as he was accepted into the Academy he left with his sister to Chetzia, he had intended on leaving alone but agreed to take Azel in order to free her from the fate of forced marriage to one of their father’s business acquaintances when she turned 16. The pair told their mother the night they were leaving but neglected to tell their farther because they knew he would try and stop them.

Tas enrolled Azel into a boarding school on Chetzia, were she would spend the three years that Tas was at the DFA academy. At the academy Tas became fast friends with the ex-marine science cadet Paige Mallory, the pair quickly discovered that they could help each other with the difficulties of academy life, Paige helping the undisciplined and uncoordinated Ferengi adjust to the military lifestyle while he helped her with the academic side of the course.

During their first year test Tas experienced the unusual responsibility of essentially being CMO for the team of Cadets, Delta 6. All of the Cadets found the test challenging but together worked out a solution for eliminating the prion virus that had infected the crew. The test turned out to be a simulation, much to Tas' relief, he had been concerned for Paige who had been placed in the position of having to make a decision that, had it been real, would have meant leaving possible survivors to their fate. Tas felt that Paige had been placed in a lose-lose situation, he tried to reassure his friend that she had made the right decision but was very relieved at hearing it was not real.

Tas learned an important lesson during the start of his first year when his vole Codey escaped and regretted having asked Paige to keep his secret, involving his friend in the inevitable punishment he felt sure he was the only one to have deserved. He also learned of the free-spirit of the DFA when they allowed him to keep the vole in spite of its being against academy rules.

During Tas' second year test with Delta 6 on New Kyushu Tas ambushed by a bear. Paige shot the pair (with a phaser on stun) and Tas was immediately alarmed, terrified that the bear was dead and afraid that its death was his fault for having attracted it with pancakes. The bear was not dead or hurt, only stunned, but at that moment Tas realized that he could never cause harm to another being and made the decision to apply for Consciousnesses objector status when they returned to the academy.

Another considerable challenge for Tas during this test delivering a pair of baby snow monkeys. Tas stepped in to deliver Kei the injured snow monkey's twins in the absence of the mid-wife, he felt real panic when the first of the pair was not breathing but remained calm and collected for his patient who ended up with two healthy babies. Tas will remember this as his first real-life handling of a medical situation.
