Toby was born on Cromwell in 2416 to Ensign Mary Knight (at the time Mary Sanders) and Crewman Charles Knight. He met Six of Twelve in April 2418 when the drone helped his mother who was injured during a Code Gray. Six returned the boy again when he wandered off later that year after Cromwell was attacked by the Mirror Universe vessel. Toby was one of six children under the care of Mary, the nursery Nanny, on West World. Six, Kit and El travelled with Mary and the children and kept them as safe as they could from the hostilities of West World. Toby wandered off during the night in search of his mother and was taken by Indians. This was were he met Wishi (or 'Giggling Kitten'). She looked after him for the rest of his time on West World.

Toby's parents died on West World and the child was left orphaned. Mary had a number of grieving children to look after but Toby, who had lost both his parents and had no other family to go to, was hit particularly hard. He would not eat, barely slept and kept counting "Six, Seven, Eight." until Mary eventually realized he wanted to see Six of Twelve. Once under the drone's supervision, Toby started to eat again and got gradually better but Six was not able to empathise with Toby or understand what a human child needed emotionally. Toby developed a friendship with MJ and spent time with Michael, he also went to councilling with Wishi. During shore-leave of 2419, Six left Toby with Michael while it went on a training module at the academy. During this time Commander Martis Dri bonded with Toby and offered to adopt him.
